    • While connecting the printer, you might be prompted to enter the wireless network name (SSID) and a wireless password.
  1. The wireless network name is the name of your wireless network.
  2. The wireless password prevents other people from connecting to your wireless network without your permission. Depending on the level of security required, your wireless network might use either a WPA passphrase or WEP key.
If you have not changed the network name or the security passkey since setting up your wireless network, you can sometimes find them on the back or side of the wireless router.

If you cannot find the network name or the security password or cannot remember this information, see the documentation provided with your computer or with the wireless router.

If you still cannot find this information, contact your network administrator or the person who set up the wireless network.

HP PageWide Enterprise 556 IP settings

  • CAUTION: Be careful when manually assigning an IP address. If you enter an invalid IP address during the installation, your network components cannot connect with the printer.

HP PageWide Enterprise Color 556 Link speed and duplex settings

  • This information applies only to Ethernet networks. It does not apply to wireless networks.
The link speed and communication mode of the print server must match the network hub. For most situations, leave the printer in automatic mode. Incorrect changes to the link speed and duplex settings might prevent the printer from communicating with other network devices. To make changes, use the printer control panel.
  • The printer setting must match the setting for the network device (a network hub, switch, gateway, router, or computer).
  • Making changes to these settings causes the printer to turn off and then on. Make changes only when the printer is idle.
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and touch the Administration button.
2. Open the following menus:
  • Network Settings
  • Jetdirect Menu
  • Link Speed
3. Select one of the following options:

Auto: The print server automatically configures itself for the highest link speed and communication
mode allowed on the network.
  • 10T Half: 10 megabytes per second (Mbps), half-duplex operation
  • 10T Full: 10 Mbps, full-duplex operation
  • 10T Auto: 10 Mbps, automatic-duplex operation
  • 100TX Half: 100 Mbps, half-duplex operation
  • 100TX Full: 100 Mbps, full-duplex operation
  • 100TX Auto: 100 Mbps, automatic-duplex operation●1000T Full: 1000 Mbps, full-duplex operation.
Touch the Save button. The printer turns off and then on.

If you connect the printer to a network, using either Ethernet or Wi-Fi, you can print to it through the cloud or connect to it through an access point on the network to print from or scan to iOS and Android phones and tablets. You can also use the front-panel touch screen to take advantage of HP Print Apps to print from various cloud sites.

If you choose to connect to a single PC via USB cable instead, you won't be able to print through the cloud or use the Print Apps. However, the printer's Wi-Fi Direct will still let you connect directly from mobile devices to print and scan. If your phone or tablet offers NFC, you can also establish the Wi-Fi Direct connection simply by tapping the device to the NFC logo on the MFP's control panel.

Two important things about this printer. First, it's wireless, so you can stick it wherever. And although the product page doesn't mention it anywhere, the Envy supports AirPrint (but not, alas, Google Cloud Print). I learned this in the HP PageWide Enterprise Color 556 user guide, which also revealed another interesting unmentioned tidbit: The printer offers automatic duplexing that's double-sided printing in layman's terms.
Second, it has a touchscreen instead of the usual button-laden control panel. Everything is better with touchscreens.
