You can scan documents, photos, and other paper types, and send them to a variety of destinations, such as a computer or an email recipient. When scanning documents with the HP printer software, you can scan to a format that can be searched and edited. When scanning a borderless original, use the scanner glass and not the document feeder.

Scan To Computer In HP OfficeJet Pro 8740

Before scanning to computer in HP OfficeJet 8740 make sure you have already installed the HP recommended printer software. The HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer and computer must be connected and turned on. In addition, on Windows computers, the printer software must be running prior to scanning. You can use the HP printer software to scan documents into editable text.

Scan to Computer (Windows)

If the printer is connected to the computer with a USB connection, the feature for scanning to computer is enabled by default and cannot be disabled. For more information, see Open HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 wireless setup
If you are using network connection, follow these instructions if the feature has been disabled, and you wish to enable it again.
  1. Open the HP 8740 printer software. For more information, see Open the HP printer software (Windows).
  2. Click Print, Scan & Fax , and then click Scan .
  3. Select Manage Scan to Computer in HP OfficeJet Pro 8740.
  4. Click Enable.

Scan to Computer (OS X)

The scan to a computer (OSX) feature is enabled by default from the factory. Follow these instructions if the feature has been disabled, and you wish to enable it again.
  1. Open HP Utility.
  2. Under Scan Settings, click Scan to Computer.
  3. Ensure that Enable Scan to Computer is selected.
To scan a document or photo to a file (Windows)
  1. Load your original print-side down on the scanner glass or print-side up in the document feeder.
  2. Open the HP printer software. For more information, see Open the HP printer software (Windows).
  3. Click Print, Scan & Fax , and then click Scan .
  4. Click Scan a Document or Photo .
  5. Select the type of scan you want and then click Scan .
  • Choose Save as PDF to save the document (or photo) as a PDF file.
  • Choose Save as JPEG to save the photo (or document) as an image file.
The initial screen allows you to review and modify basic settings. Click the More link at the top right corner of the Scan dialog to review and modify detailed settings. For more information, see Change scan settings (Windows).
If Show Viewer After Scan is selected, you can make adjustments to the scanned image in the preview screen.

To Scan an Original From In HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer software (OS X)

  1. Open HP Easy Scan.
  2. Easy Scan is located in the Applications folder. Click Scan .
  3. Choose the type of scan profile you want and follow the onscreen instructions

Scan to a Memory Device In HP OfficeJet Pro 8740

You can scan directly to a USB flash drive from the printer control panel without using a computer or the HP printer software provided with the printer.
  • Do not remove the flash drive from the printer USB port while it is being accessed by the printer.
This can damage the files on the USB flash drive. You can safely remove a USB flash drive only when the USB port light is not blinking.
  • The printer does not support encrypted USB flash drives.

To scan an original to a memory device from the printer control panel
  1. Load your original print-side down on the scanner glass or print-side up in the document feeder.
  2. Insert a USB flash drive.
  3. Touch Scan , and then select Memory Device.
  4. Make changes to scan options, if needed.
  5. Touch Start Scan .
